One year goes into another and you don’t think about it.

Velma McKee has been the Washington County Farm Bureau secretary for 56 years now. She started in October of 1967. It’s the type of job she says she always wanted.

Velma McKee
I always wanted to work in an office, and back when I first started, what experience have you had? Not very many will give you a chance. And Farm Bureau did and I kind of felt loyalty there because they did give me an opportunity to work.

There has to be a good reason to stay in one place for more than 50 years. There’s many reasons for Velma, but the people are at the top of the list.

Velma McKee
The ones you work with, you get acquainted with them their families. It’s like one big happy family. I started out I had the teenagers that got married, they had kids, we insured them, their kids, so I mean it’s just a family and they respect what Farm Bureau stands for.

One of the highlights for Velma was going to Hawaii twice for the American Farm Bureau convention.

Velma McKee
It was like a dream. I had as I say I hadn’t traveled that much. I guess I had flown one other time me and my sister went to New York and I took my first plane trip and boat ride.

At 78 Velma still comes to work every day with her warm, friendly smile like she always says, and has no plans to retire anytime soon.

Velma McKee
As long as my health holds up I’m gonna meet the people.

More than a half a century of hard work and dedication that’s still going today. For Tennessee Home and Farm Radio, I’m Thomas Capps.
