White County’s Terra Davis Named Excellence in Agriculture Winner

During the Young Farmers and Ranchers Fall Tour, White County’s Terra Davis was named the state winner of the Excellence in Agriculture Award and will go on to compete in Austin at the American Farm Bureau Federation’s (AFBF) Virtual Convention in January.

The Excellence in Agriculture Award recognizes young farmers who derive the majority of their income for an off-farm occupation, but who actively contribute and grow through their involvement in agriculture, their leadership ability and participation in Farm Bureau and other organizations.

Terra is an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Cumberland County High School in Crossville, Tenn, while her husband, Andy, farms row crops and cattle fulltime with his family in White County.

Terra has been very active in the Young Farmers and Ranchers program ever since she turned 18 and could join the organization. She has served on Tennessee’s YF&R State Committee, participated in the American Farm Bureau’s Women’s Communications Boot Camp, and in 2019, Terra and Andy were selected as the second place winners in the State YF&R Achievement Award contest. The couple has also hosted a dove shoot on their farm to raise money for their local YF&R program.

As the state winner, Terra receives a John Deere Gator sponsored by Farm Credit Mid-America. Normally, the state winner would also received a trip to the 2021 American Farm Bureau Convention, courtesy of Tennessee Farm Bureau, but as the convention is being held virtually this year, arrangements for another gift are being made. The national winner will get a 2020 truck and the second place winner will receive a new Case IH tractor.

Matt and Colbie Niswander of Lawrence County were selected as this year’s second-place winners. Third was Matthew McClanahan of Cumberland County, fourth was Josey Miller of Loudon County and fifth was Laura Vaught of Rutherford County.
