Two Crockett County FFA chapter members were awarded this year’s state Star awards with their respective Supervised Agricultural Experience program.

Lee Maddox: Crockett County FFA Stars. Welcome and hello again everyone, for Tennessee Home and Farm Radio – I’m Lee Maddox.

Wess Lewis: It was really real privileged honor.

Clark Henderson: I was pretty excited, but it all seems surreal really.

Lee Maddox: At this year’s State FFA Convention, two Crockett County Chapter members were awarded stars with their respective supervised agricultural experience programs. Weston Lewis was named the Star in Agribusiness.

Wess Lewis: Well I have six different businesses I run and one of them is horseshoeing, hay bale, horse training, horse trading. I gave a few random lessons and I have my own cattle. And my dad, he’s been shooting horses for almost 30 years now, so I learned a lot from him. And he grew up in it, so it got me involved at a really young age. It’s pretty, pretty cool. Pretty cool lifestyle.

Lee Maddox: Weston Lewis says he hopes to continue in the farrier business and may attend horseshoeing school in Oklahoma.

Wess Lewis: It’s a dying breed, the horse shoers, there ain’t many around and it’s really a lot more than just putting the shoe on one. You’ve got to balance the hoof with all the ligaments and tendons and the legs make it all happen.

Lee Maddox: This year’s Star in Ag Placement went to Clark Henderson of Crockett County.

Clark Henderson: I work for a family farm where we have a diversified crop production of cotton, corn, beans and wheat, and we also run a cotton gin, and we also have cows and we transport cotton pickers to Texas to pick a large portion of custom harvest acres down there.

Lee Maddox: Clark Henderson works for his family’s operation Diamond P Farms where he has lots of responsibilities. He plans to attend UT Martin in the fall to pursue a degree in plant and soil science.

Clark Henderson: Farming has been a part of my life all my life, and I just really feel like FFA is very supportive of that and they really applaud you for it and make you feel, you know, you might not play sports or be in band, but there’s a place for farmers and there’s a place for all for all of your friends to be together.

Lee Maddox: And for Tennessee Home and Farm Radio – I’m Lee Maddox.
