For decades, Dr. Ron Hanson has traveled across the nation speaking to farm families about the importance of succession planning and why the future of their farm depends heavily on it. He recently spoke at the Tennessee Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Conference.

Thomas Capps: Planning Ahead to Keep the Farm in the Family. Hello and welcome to Tennessee Home and Farm Radio, I’m Thomas Capps.

Dr. Ron Hanson: This topic of family succession is extremely important because it impacts the agricultural industry as well as those farm families.

Dr. Ron Hanson: I’m very appreciative of Tennessee Farm Bureau, giving me the opportunity to come here and have a chance to speak at the State Women’s Leadership Conference, and share some thoughts and insights on how to avoid sometimes the problems. The family’s succession planning train wrecks that can happen when families have failed to communicate failed to plan, can’t work things out.

Thomas Capps: Dr. Hanson says the big reason families don’t ever talk about succession is because it’s just an uncomfortable topic.

Dr. Ron Hanson: It’s a very difficult topic for a lot of families to address particularly farm producers. You know, the thought of someday someone else is going to own my farm or someday I may not be on my farm is really an emotional and people put it off. Well, we’ll do this next year. We’ll do this next season.

Thomas Capps: Planning ahead and forming a succession plan is critical for the survival of your farm and the entire ag industry as a whole.

Dr. Ron Hanson: Unfortunately, things happen – unexpected illness, unexpected death and too many times families let an emergency or crisis situation be the motivator to begin planning ahead. Planning ahead and getting things done is extremely important.
