TFBF Supports New Pest Control Option for Honeybees

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing the registration of Vadescana, an insecticide active ingredient seeking to help beekeepers protect their honeybee colonies from Varroa mites (Varroa destructor). Varroa mites spread disease among honeybees, feed on honeybees, and can be detrimental to entire honeybee colonies if not treated. TFBF submitted comments to EPA supporting the registration of Vadescana dsRNA to better protect honeybees from Varroa mites.

“We acknowledge EPA’s recognition of the harm [Varroa mites] not only cause to honeybee colonies, but the larger threat to the entire agricultural industry and food supply,” writes TFBF President Eric Mayberry. “Beekeepers need every viable option to respond to pest pressures. The success of honeybees is crucial to farmers of all types.”
