The Tennessee Department of Revenue is reminding all agricultural professionals, producers and any others who are agricultural exemption holders that they must verify their exemption with the department by December 31 of this year to keep buying certain agricultural items tax-free.
Amy Beckham: Time to Renew Ag Exemption Cards. Hello there and welcome to Tennessee Home and Farm Radio, I’m Amy Beckham.
Kathleen Jacob: Come December 31 every single person who already has this exemption has to verify they still qualify.
Amy Beckham: Well the Tennessee Department of Revenue is reminding all agricultural professionals, producers and any others who are agricultural exemption holders that they must verify their exemption with the department by December 31 of this year to keep buying certain agricultural items tax free. Kathleen Jacob, public information officer for the department, shares a little about the exemption and why it’s beneficial to farmers.
Kathleen Jacob: Agriculture tax exemption is just something that any of our agriculture professionals can apply for and use on pretty much any item that they use 50% or more of the time for agricultural purposes. Last year, they expanded it to cover even more. Examples are fertilizer, pesticides, livestock and poultry feed, drugs used for livestock, seed, gasoline and diesel for agriculture operations. So, it really covers a wide variety of these products that these agriculture professionals use every single day.
Amy Beckham: Currently, there are roughly 110,000 agricultural certificate exemption holders in Tennessee. And Jacob reminds folks that even if you’ve applied and received your exemption this year, you still have to verify as these exemptions expire every fourth year.
Kathleen Jacob: Everyone is on the same schedule when it comes to this period of time. So it’s just a way for us to make sure that all of our records are up to date.
Amy Beckham: Exemption holders should have received a letter in the mail with instructions, but Kathleen also explains how to renew your card.
Kathleen Jacob: You can do it by mail, you can do it online, we have step by step instructions, but we also want people to know you can call our taxpayer services line and someone will walk you through it and basically do it for you. So, we just need them to be in contact with us so that we can make sure they’re good to go come December 31.
